Preparing For Your Telehealth Appointment

Telehealth can run smoothly with some preparation. Here are some considerations:

Technology Set-Up:

You will need a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone.

Make sure your camera is set up so that it captures enough of you that that therapist wait and guide you through activities.

Make sure you have a reliable and high-speed Internet connection so that your video calls are clear and uninterrupted.

Make sure your software is up-to-date. Sign-on prior to your session to make sure your system is not going to do an automatic update during your session.

Tested out your equipment prior to the call miss out on any of your session time.

Environment

Choose a quiet room in which you feel comfortable performing exercises, discussing personal health information, and know that you will not be disturbed.

Make sure that your space is free of obstacles and hazards.

Mindset & Conversation

Keep in mind that you may need to be flexible during your session. It can feel like a very different experience compared to your usual in-person appointments and require a shift in mindset.

Be open in your communication if something is not working for you. It is part of your physical therapist’s job to make your experience effective. Giving us feedback allows us to personalize your experience.

Clothing

Make sure to wear clothing which allows you to move comfortably And allows the therapist to evaluate you effectively. For example, your therapist may ask you to roll up your pant leg so that they can see your knee while you perform a squat exercise on camera.

Treatment Equipment

Ideally your treatment equipment would be in the same room as your camera set-up so that you do not have to keep moving items around.

In the case that you do have to move your equipment to your camera set up, consider having a box or bag of all your physical therapy gear so that you can easily transfer them from room to room. This saves you time and reduces the likelihood that you will misplace something.
